September is German-American Friendship Month
Steuben Parade, Jazz concerts and Alpine Rock Cruise among program highlights
The month of September 2010 will be “German-American Friendship Month” in the city of New York, as the Mayor´s office has now confirmed. It is the fourth consecutive time, that the city honors German-American culture and the contributions of immigrants from Germany by dedicating an entire month of celebration, in which German-Americans organize many events and festivities.
Mayor Mike Bloomberg, a friend and supporter of the German-American community, will be starting off “German-American Friendship Month” with a reception on September 1st, 2010 hosted at the German style Biergarten at the Standard Hotel.
This will be followed by cultural events throughout the entire month such as concerts, movie presentations, lectures but also a Pub Crawl and a yacht cruise around Manhattan featuring New York´s Number One Alpine Rock band, “Die Schlauberger”.
The highlight of Friendship Month will be the traditional German-American Steuben Parade, which will be held on Saturday, September 25th on Fifth Avenue between 67th and 86th Street. Steuben Parade Chairman Lars Halter is expecting more than twenty music and dance groups from Germany to march in this year´s parade. The parade will also feature masked and costumed Karneval groups, folks in Tracht (the traditional historical garb worn in many German regions), marksmen and marching bands. “The German-American Steuben Parade is known to be the most colorful parade in New York City and, once again, we are proud to present a wonderful variety of groups for the entertainment of all age groups,” says Halter.
The Steuben Parade will be led by two Grand Marshals: the legendary “Dr. Ruth” Westheimer, who was born in Frankfurt/Germany, as well as Dr. Michael Möller, the Managing Director of Staatliches Hofbräuhaus in Munich/Germany, which produces the fastest growing German beer on the US market, Hofbräu.
The Steuben Parade will also feature Miss German-America, Stephanie Russell-Kraft, and her court of Princesses and a Junior General. They will be greeting spectators from their leading float, which will be followed by many more colorful floats celebrating historic German-Americans, including baseball legends “Babe” Ruth and Lou Gehrig as well as children´s book author, Dr. Seuss.
As for the events of German-American Friendship Month, some of the hightlights are:
JazzKraut - Thursday, September 2 – 8 PM and 10 PM
A concert featuring the best German Jazz musicians in New York at the legendary Iridium Jazz Club. Musicians include “Vana” Gierig (p), Iris Ornig and Martin Wind (b), Sebastian Noelle (g), Phillip Gutbrod and Christian Finger (dr), Hendrik Meurkens (har), Micaela Leon and Karen Kohler (voc), and many more.
Semmelrogge´s Achterbahn - Tuesday, September 7 – 6.30 PM
“Life is a roller coaster, “ says Martin Semmelrogge – and he would know. One of Germany´s most prolific actors, he starred in “Das Boot” and “Schindler´s List”, innumerous TV productions, but has also spent some time in jail. He will read from his autobiography “Das Leben ist eine Achterbahn”.
Alpine Thunder Cruise - Thursday, September 9 – 7 PM
Join New York´s Number One Alpine Rock band “Die Schlauberger” on a 4-hour-cruise around New York. German food and all beer, wine and liquor is included.
For Kids: “Little Cloud Upset” - Friday, September 10 – 3 PM
“Little Cloud Upset” introduces kids to international relations and global affairs. The book follows a little cloud that travels across the globe observing all sorts of global challenges. The cloud flies over melting ice caps, watches children play in refugee camps and remembers witnessing the fall of the Berlin Wall. Ages 5 and up.
Blume´s Short Movies - Friday, September 10 – 7 PM
Born in East Germany, Michael Blume is one of Germany´s most interesting film makers. He will present five of his latest shorts, among them the Thomas-Mann-themed “Heiligendamm” featuring Hanna Schygulla.
Becoming a German - Thursday, September 16 – 12 Noon
Rick Landman lost 17 members of his family in the Holocaust. He didn´t lose his love for Germany, though, and recently became a German citizen. At this DAAD “Transatlantic Lunch Talk” he explains why.
Pub Crawl - Saturday, September 18 – 12 Noon
The Pub Crawl focuses on what many might like best about Germany: beer. A double-decker bus will take you through New York´s bars and beer gardens.
Daniel Kehlmann: Fame - 7 PM: Goethe-Institut Wyoming Building, 5 East 3rd Street, NYC
Bestselling author Daniel Kehlmann (“Measuring the World”), will be reading some loosely connected stories from his latest book, “Fame”.
