Lederhosen, Dirndls and Tons of Gemütlichkeit!

Lars Halter in Lederhosen with Club President Ferdinand Huber and friendsSchuhplattler V.V. Original Enzian of Franklin Square, Long Island celebrated its Bavarian Heritage Festival this past weekend, June 13th and 14th.

Those who attended were treated to a phenomenal time - an always welcome dose of all that makes Bavarian culture so much fun! There was oompah music, bell ringing, alp horn playing, and traditional Schuhplattler dancing entertainment by both the adult and children members of the host Verein! In addition, there were chicken dances, conga lines and lots and lots of polka!Isabella Caico & Sarah Murphy

Among the bands that played, Spitze, is direct from the magic kingdom's own biergarten at EPCOT in Florida. The internationally known band that has also played in Germany, was flown to New York for this festival, and put on quite the show! Along with the local band die Spitzbuam, another extremely popular German-American band in the metropolitan area that hails from Long Island, the audience was assured there was no shortage of good music!! Plattduetsche Park’s own Foehrer Musik Freunde, a 30 piece brass band that was the last ever to play a concert at Shea Stadium in September of 2008, and the Adam Barthalt Orchestra rounded the field.

Present for the fun event was the 2009 Miss German-America Queen’s Court,Christina Ostner & Kristiana St. John consisting of our two lovely princesses and the junior princesses, who sold cornflowers while spreading the news about our beautiful Parade. Lars Halter, the General Chairman of the German-American Steuben Parade, wore his lederhosen for the occasion. Some say he tried his own version of the schuhplattler; others thought they heard him yodel!
