German-American Steuben Parade at NASDAQ and Times Square

German-American Friendship Month started big this year - literally. Consul General Dr. Horst Freitag, joined by the Steuben Parade Committee and guests rang the Closing Bell at the Nasdaq Market Site and had the ceremony, their pictures and the Steuben Parade cornflower logo projected eight stories high in the middle of New York´s busy Times Square.

Nasdaq Vice President Silvia Davi was excited to celebrate German-American Friendship Month at the Market Site. Nasdaq, the world´s largest exchange company, lists some German companies at their New York site, produces regular reports on German news station n-tv, and is also familiar with other parts of German-American culture. "The German business is very interesting for us," Davi told Consul General Dr. Horst Freitag. Freitag himself applauded the Steuben Parade committee for their work in putting together German-American Friendship Month, which these days is held for the third consecutive time.

Among those present for the bell ringing ceremony were Steuben Parade General Chairman Lars Halter and Vice Chairwoman Geraldine Brand; they were joined by many committee members as well as dancers from at least four different Schuhplattler groups. Their beautiful Tracht was admired by New Yorkers and tourists all over Times Square. Among the committees guests were Dr. Benno Bunse, CEO of the German-American Chamber of Commerce, as well as representatives from Mercedes-Benz Manhattan and other corporate partners.

Two high profile VIP helped the committee ring in German-American Friendship Month: Grand Marshal and Fox 5 TV reporter Linda Schmidt, as well as German comedian Hape Kerkeling, who later that night would start off the cultural activities of September with a highly successful reading from his book "I'm off then."
