A TASTE OF HISTORY, CORNISH GAME HEN AND A LITTLE BOCK...
If you did not attend "A Taste of History" at the historic Fraunces Tavern in NYC, you missed quite a treat!
The event, hosted by the German-American Steuben Parade Committee of NY as part of its German-American Friendship Month, was one of those events that the Committee puts together but once a year in the hopes of giving back a little bit of History…and then some.
Attendees were treated to a fabulous five course meal at the highly regarded and very historic Fraunces Tavern, in the heart of Wall Street. Rumor has it the Tavern, which also is host to a historic museum, was a favorite of one General George Washington after the Revolutionary War. Another famous Revolutionary War hero, General VonSteuben, is also known to have indulged in a pint of suds at Fraunces!
The meal was served in five courses, each with a matching beer catering to the specific dish being served. Radeberger was the first, followed by a Weiss bier from Weistephaner, a Hofbrau Original, a Hofbrau Oktoberfest, and a double bock also from Hofbrau!
During the course of the evening, two guest speakers gave presentations on their fields of expertise. Professor Paul Lockhart provided us with his insight into the life of Baron vonSteuben. His book, "The Drillmaster of Valley Forge" is perhaps better known as one of the most insightful biographies on the General. Author Richard Panchyk offered a glimpse on what German settlers in NYC had to go through to get to the position where they are today.
Parade General Chairman Lars Halter commented that each author and lecturer offered remarkable insight into History. "Lockhart's book is a character study like none written before about vonSteuben." Panchyk's presentation "offered a rare glimpse into the life and legacy of the German settlers who have left their mark on all aspects of NY."
My own quote on the evening is much simpler than our General Chairman's: "the beer was great, the food was delicious and the lecture was very informative!"
