80 Pounds of German Goods
New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan Greets Steuben Parade Committee

With the conclusion of the 52nd Annual German-American Steuben Parade well behind, while in the early stages of planning next year´s festivities, the Parade Committee and friends of the Parade came together on the first Sunday of Advent to celebrate mass at St. Patrick´s Cathedral, and to meet with the Archbishop of New York, the Most Reverend Timothy Dolan.

His Excellency, who held a beautiful Mass in honor of the Steuben Parade to start this year's Parade Weekend on the 19th of September, had impressed the Parade Committee as well as the hundreds in attendance, not only with his thoughtful homily, but also with his almost fluent skills in the German language! It was his first ever Steuben Parade Mass since arriving in New York from his previous post in Milwaukee/Wisconsin.

"I remember well how the Archbishop asked me in jest whether I would tutor him, and help him perfect his German language skills." says Steuben Parade General Chairman Lars Halter. "He said his German would probably improve if he had a few German beers!"His Excellency Archbishop Timothy Dolan welcomed members and friends of the Steuben Parade Committee to a private audience following mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

To that end, and in order to help the Archbishop, the Steuben Parade Committee presented him with a gift basket including several bottles of Hofbräu and Weihenstephaner Bier, as well as some original beer steins, courtesy of SKI Beer. In addition, the basket contained German chocolates, pralines, jam and other goodies courtesy of A&P. Both SKI and A&P are proud sponsors and loyal partners of the German-American Steuben Parade.

"Meeting the Archbishop was a once-in-a-lifetime experience", said Ralph Mauriello, Chairman and Founder of SKI Beer, after a private audience. A&P and its related companies - Pathmark, Food Emporium and Waldbaums - were represented by its CEO and Chairman Mr. Christian Haub, who together with his entire family also enjoyed this get-together in the back of the distinguished Cathedral. Mr. Haub was one of the Grand Marshals of the 52nd Annual Steuben Parade this past September.

In return, His Excellency was excited about hosting next year's 53rd Annual German-American Steuben Parade, which will be held on Saturday, September 25th, 2010. "I have enjoyed our Mass in September tremendously", he told the Committee before taking time to chat and take pictures with the Committee members. "Next year I want to be in the Parade," the Archbishop announced. The Steuben Parade Committee is now working to make this happen, and organize a great parade on Fifth Avenue for His Excellency and tens of thousands of New Yorkers to enjoy.
