Steuben Parade Court makes appearances at German-American festivals
It is festival season for German-Americans all over the Greater New York area, and almost every weekend "Miss German-America" and her court are making appearances at club events. "It´s been a whirlwind of activities," says Miss German-America, Denise Manukian. "I truly enjoy being with other proud German-Americans and partaking in our culture and traditions. It really makes me so proud to be a part of it all."
In her role as Miss German-America, Denise is an ambassador for German-American culture, and she takes her assignment seriously: "It gives me great pleasure to educate others about our German heritage and its truly wonderful to address the crowd in both German and English."
Joined by Princesses Susanne Stuppert and Christina Kraker, Miss German-America has already met thousands of enthusiastic German-Americans, and she is looking forward to the crowning event of the season: the German-American Steuben Parade on September 17. With just about two months to go, things are shaping up well and it looks like New York will see another great and colorful Steuben Parade.
At this point, 21 groups from Germany and Austria have signed up to march up Fifth Avenue. One of the many highlights will be the Bundesmusikzug des Technischen Hilfswerk, the music corps of the German disaster relief organization THW. They will bring no less than 70 musicians to New York to entertain the crowd. Other music groups include the Jugendkapelle Maisach from Bavaia, who are regulars at the Parade, this being their fifth appearance on Fifth Avenue.
The organizers are also looking forward to hear the "Wattenläufer" perform, a Frisian band from Niedersachsen, the official guest state of the Steuben Parade. Niedersachsen will be represented by Minister President David McAllister.
Other groups in the Parade will include the Gebirgsschützen Waakirchen, the Schmalzler Pass Freidling, a pipe and drum corps from Dremmen, the Berglerburschen of Leipzig, as well as the Tiroler Schützen from Austria.
In addition to the many marching groups, the Steuben Parade boasts more than 20 floats celebrating German-American history and culture ranging from tributes to General von Steuben and John Denver to Oktoberfest-themed floats.
